Surf Life Saving Australia Course Syllabus Bronze Medallion PUA21004 Certificate II in Public Safety (aquatic rescue)

PRE-REQUISITES

A candidate must:

  1. • Be a minimum of 15 years old on the date of assessment.
  2. • Have completed a 400 metre swim in nine (9) minutes or less, in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres, or over a measured open water course which will be Instructor assessed prior to the candidate undertaking any water training or assessment activities, evidence of which must be provided to the Assessor on the timed swim form prior to commencement of the assessment for this qualification..

  4. • Describe methods of escaping from a rip for both strong and poor swimmers.

Recognise an appropriate safe beach and zone for surf bathing in key locations

  1. • Identify the types of beaches.
  2. • Assess prevailing weather conditions.
  3. • Identify safety aspects of the beach structure.

Demonstrate surf skills

  1. • Perform a swim, negotiate the surf, using fins plus a rescue tube.
  2. • Paddle a board, negotiate the surf, using an SLSA rescue board.
  3. • Demonstrate escape methods from a rip.

Basic First Aid

Identify basic patient management techniques

  1. • Perform checks to identify potential danger to oneself, the patient and bystanders: specifically, ways to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
  2. • Define the principles of basic first aid management.
  3. • Recognise and manage external bleeding injuries.
  4. • Recognise and manage patient shock and fainting.
  5. • Recognise and manage patients suffering minor burns: specifically, sunburn.
  6. • Recognise and manage patients suffering from needle-stick injuries.
  7. • Recognise and manage patients suffering soft tissue injuries, using the specific techniques of rest, ice, compression and elevation.
  8. • Perform a basic emergency care management assessment: specifically, danger, response, airway, breathing, circulation, and defibrillation.

Basic Resuscitation

Perform basic resuscitation techniques

  4. • Perform mouth-to-mouth, mouth-to-nose and mouth-to-mask expired air resuscitation techniques (EAR).

Resuscitation (CPR)

Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques

Communications

Communicate in the workplace

  1. • Explain how interpersonal communication happens.
  2. • Demonstrate the five skills needed for effective interpersonal communications.
  3. • Discuss the appropriateness of the different styles of interpersonal communications.
  4. • Choose an appropriate channel to ensure effective interpersonal communications.
  5. • Minimise potential breakdowns and barriers when communicating in the workplace.
  6. • Take part in group discussions and informal meetings.
  7. • Demonstrate SLSA document procedures.
  8. • Demonstrate SLSA signals.

Radio Communications

Perform radio communication practices using approved SLSA radios

  1. • Describe the way the SLSA radio system network operates.
  2. • Demonstrate basic transmitting and receiving procedures and call signs.
  3. • Detail search and rescue emergency procedures.
  4. • Detail pre-patrol and post-patrol procedures.

Rescue Techniques

Perform patient approaches, support and escapes aided by equipment on a conscious and an unconscious patient

  1. • Perform a tube and board rescue for a person in distress.
  2. • Assess the patient’s level of distress.
  3. • Secure and support the patient using the rescue equipment.
  4. • Perform front and rear release and escape methods.
  5. • Perform leg and arm blocks.
  6. • Perform patient tows; specifically tired swimmer, armpit and wrist tows.
  7. • Return the patient safely to shore.

Identify people in distress in a surfing or water environment

  1. • Describe the signs of drowning; specifically, climbing the ladder, poor flotation, being face down or waving arms.
  2. • List common rescues, and sites and conditions for rescues experienced by lifesavers.
  3. • Describe the states in which people requiring assistance may be; specifically, anxious, panicking, calm or in shock.

Perform surf skills

  1. • Complete a 200 meter run, 200 meter swim and 200 meter run within eight minutes (Bronze Medallion).
  2. • Complete a 100 meter run, 100 meter swim and 100 meter run within 5 minutes (Surf Rescue Certificate).

Perform patient retrieval and support unaided by equipment
